Does anyone know what the old angle was? It makes no sense since you do not pick up different flare nuts for different refrigerants.
From other threads I am getting the impression you need to put more pipe through the flare block to fit on the face correctly. Also Grainger sells a Rigid that does single lap and double lap. Does anyone know what this means? Grainger P 4A Thanks guys. You have either 37 or 45 degree flares. I am assuming that what they mean by single or double lap is a single or double lipped flare. With the higher pressure of a single flare would probably not be strong enough.

I've done plenty of work with Ra however have not dealt with flaring pipes for R Most R22 systems Ive dealt with have already been installed, and since I've been asked to re-install a working split where the existing pipes were damaged during transport I'd like to find out abit more.
All I know is since there is a lower operating pressure with R22, the flare does not have to be as "deep" and the copper pipe does not to be as thick compared to pipework for Ra.
Is a person able to use the Ra flaring block for R22 flares? Can the pipe to be flared be left more in the flaring block so the flare isnt as large? Thanks in advance. Re: Flaring differences between R22 and Ra The flare size is dictated by the fittings and as far as I am aware the standard dimensions of SAE flare fittings have not change.
If however you have some odd fittings made for metric pipe check a test flare on both the female and male fittings this should indicate any discrepancies. As far as I am aware your standard flare block and standard method of producing flared fitting should be the same for R22 as it is for RA. The RA flare tool will create a defined 45 degree angle in the copper so it will seal tightly against the flare fitting. Older flare tools will not create a tight seal. When installing mini-splits, flares are required on each end of the line set to connect the evaporator and condenser.
Since RA is a much higher pressure than older refrigerants, mini split manufacturers often require a larger diameter, deeper flare to produce stronger joints. In this photo, the flare on the right is a new flare created with the RA flare tool. Also, the flare is larger and has more surface area than the one on the left. This will produce a stronger connection because there is more area to seal against the flare fitting. Follow these steps to create a flare with the RA Flare tool. First, insert your copper into the flare tool based on the diameter of your copper, as shown in the photo above. The copper should be flush with the flare bar.
It should not extend above the flare bar as old flare bars have required. Attach the yoke to the flare bar and then turn the handle on the yoke to flare the copper.

This is not surprising given the fact that R22 prices continue to escalate as the supply continues to shrink. I asked the director of facilities what he felt were the most common places they experienced refrigerant leaks and what they were doing to try to keep them to a minimum.
This particular chain has approximately stores, ranging from less than a year old to ancient. To clarify, ancient to a supermarket is a store that has not seen a remodel for over 15 years. Given the range of ages, they have stores where some of the thermostatic expansion valves TEVs might include those with flare connections. These stores are in a separate category as the flare TEVs can be a major source of leaks. The best remedy for these is to replace the flare valves with ODF valves but it is probably not a practical remedy.
It is likely to ensure that the delicate, electronically operated step-motor valves are not overheated during installation. Yet, the dilemma is that they can have a tendency to leak. There can also be great variation in the quality of the flare joint, depending on who is making it and which tools they are using. Since the flare is typically hand-made in the field, without proper tools and a flare gauge, the results of the flare will likely vary from technician to technician.
What might have been an inferior flare that still provided a leak free joint with the relatively low pressures seen with R may not stand a chance in an RA system. If the surface area of the flare is smaller than the corresponding mating surface, there will be insufficient area to support the necessary force generate.

In addition, since this ineffective joint will likely become a leaking joint, the typical first attempt at repair might lead to over-tightening. A too thin flare occurs when the amount of tubing above the deck of the flare tool is insufficient to make a correctly-sized flare. The thinner flare joint can stress the copper, resulting in a weakened or cracked flare. Using a flaring tool rated for RA with a clutch will prevent over-tightening and the resulting flare thinning.
Cutting a piece of copper tubing with a tube cutter even one with a sharp cutting wheel will leave a ridge on the inside of the tubing.
A deburring tool must be used to remove the ridge otherwise the flare will have a ridge on it. Blade deburring tools will yield the best results, leaving a smooth surface inside the tubing.
Since over-tightening is a somewhat subjective term, many OEMs utilizing flare connections have created torque specifications for their flare joints. Not only does this provide the minimum torque to ensure that the joint is leak free, it also provides the maximum torque, which will ensure that the joint is not damaged due to over-tightening. On a new installation, leak checking with psi dry nitrogen, along with good evacuation procedure, can verify that the flare joints are leak free.
First, it is always best to check with the equipment manufacturer to see what it recommends regarding the use of sealant on flare threads. I find them to be less reliable than soldered connections. Has anyone ever soldered the entire flare connection and nut assembly together? Originally Posted by heater I've seen all three. Even so, why any manufacturer would use flares today is beyond me, but I'm not a manufacturer, I'm just a dumb tech.
I would not solder the entire connection together, even if it is possible. Think about what happens if anyone needs to disconnect it later. They will swear at you. As I said, flares can be a very reliable way to join lines. I've seen flare connections over 20 years old, in service daily that didn't leak. Are you making the flare right? Deburr the tube? Oil the fitting? Did you overtorque and crack a flarenut?
If you are insistent upon soldering something, cut the connectors away and solder straight pipe in. We have been told by one manufacturer that the flare fittings are different than what we normally use. It even takes a different flaring tool. Saying that, we have still always use the nornal flare tools and haven't had leaks. I 've always liked the flare fittings, if they are made properly. A flare fitting done right, won't leak.
